Trucks Available for Hire: Find UK Haulage Capacity

Updated By Freight1 team 3 min read

Quick answer

These are trucks available for hire right now: hauliers post where their vehicle will be empty, when, and where it can go next. Shippers and forwarders use the list to book capacity directly, often at a better rate because the haulier would otherwise drive that leg empty.

This page is mainly for shippers who need a vehicle quickly. If you’d rather hauliers came to you, our guide to shipping freight explains how to post a load and compare offers.

Each listing shows the vehicle, its weight class, where it's available and where it can go.

Find available trucks

Start with the vehicle you need, not the price. A 26t rigid with a tail-lift suits pallets to shops; a 44t artic curtainsider suits full loads; a skeletal or side-loader suits containers. With about 30% of UK lorry distance run empty (DfT, 2024), there is a good chance a haulier already has a truck heading your way. Open a listing, check the haulier’s licence, insurance and ratings, then press Request this truck. The haulier confirms or declines, and the job and its rating are recorded against both accounts. For an urgent job, a posted load reaches hauliers who haven’t listed their trucks.

Post your truck

Hauliers: if you’re tipping in Manchester on Thursday and nothing is booked home, post the truck before you leave the yard. Say where it will be empty, from what time, the trailer and weight class, and the areas you can cover. Shippers searching that region will see it and can request it in one click. Post the same lane each week and the same shippers start looking for you. That is how a backload turns into a contract. More tactics are in how to find backloads.

A truck listing that gets booked

  • Exact town or postcode area and time empty
  • Trailer type, length and any tail-lift or moffett
  • Weight class and pallet capacity
  • Where you can go next ("anywhere south", "M62 corridor")

Frequently asked questions

How can I find an available lorry for my load today?

Search the trucks list for your collection area and vehicle type, check the haulier's licence and ratings, then request the truck. If nothing fits, post your load so hauliers can offer.

Where do hauliers post empty trucks in the UK?

Hauliers post empty trucks on load boards such as Freight1, listing where the vehicle will be free and where it can travel, so shippers can book the return leg.

How much does it cost to hire a truck through Freight1?

Freight1 takes no commission. You agree the rate with the haulier. Membership is a flat weekly or monthly fee after a 7-day free trial.

Can I see the haulier's insurance before booking?

Yes. Hauliers can record their operator licence and insurance with expiry dates, and checked documents show a "Checked by Freight1" mark to members.

Book capacity or fill your truck

Shippers: request a listed truck or post your load and let hauliers come to you. Hauliers: post your empty leg today and stop driving home for nothing.
